3D printers range in price from less than £200 for a hobby printer to perhaps £2000+ for a good quality professional printer.
Enclosed. Industrial/ professional printers are most often enclosed, this provides a better level of control over the printing process and higher safety. It’s important to ensure the enclosure has a fume filtration system, alternatively you can purchase a safety cabinet for it. An enclosed machine is safer for a number of reasons: protection from injury from moving parts, protection from burns and protection from fumes.
Resolution. Most 3D printers use plastic (PLA) or resin (SLA) to build products. In many cases the printer will use a nozzle with a 0.4mm diameter, and generally the printer can lay it down with an accuracy of 0.1mm. Resin printers give a much higher resolution using layers of around 0.05mm. The choice will depend on the nature of what you are trying to print and the facilities you have available. Resin printers use chemicals and require post processing. Filament printers are more suitable for office based businesses.
Design. Every 3D printer comes with software that can import free model files and allow the printer to convert them into 3D designs. To create your own designs you will need to use a dedicated 3D modelling or CAD application. Some 3D printers can connect directly to a PC or Mac over USB, while others are designed to be driven over a network (either wireless or wired).
